Through a combination of clean technology solutions, internal operations focused on using energy responsibly, and its dedicated employees, Applied Materials is using resources to provide sustainability leadership while helping protect the global environment.

A 1.2 megawatt solar tracer installation atop Applied's elevated parking canopy in Sunnyvale, California, captures 25 percent more sunlight than fixed systems and eliminates 2,700 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Applied Materials was named to Plenty Magazine's second annual ?Plenty 20' list of key businesses that are making a sustainable future more possible, citing the company's expertise in nanomanufacturing technology and Applied's efforts to help create the largest thin-film solar cells in the world.

We're taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint. By 2012, Applied's goal is to reduce annual carbon emissions by roughly 20% from 2006 levels, effectively eliminating 50,000 tons of greenhouse gases - equal to taking 10,000 cars off the road or saving enough energy to power more than 6,400 U.S. households for an entire year. One example is Applied's consolidation of 27 server rooms into a single energy-efficient data center, reducing server room square footage by 75 percent and improving energy efficiency by 35 percent.

Recognized among the Top 25 U.S. corporate green power users today, by 2012, Applied Materials plans to obtain 15% of its annual energy from renewable sources, including the solar energy produced at our California, Texas and Xi'an locations.

Since 2004, using technology that Applied developed to reduce up to 99% of the copper in wastewater, Applied reduced its liquid hazardous waste disposal by 90% - that's equal to taking 900 tanker trips totaling 45,000 miles off the road - or reducing more than 500 tons of carbon equivalent emissions to date.

Continuing its 15-year tradition of recycling and minimizing waste, Applied Materials aims to reduce paper use by 50% by year-end 2008 - eliminating the use of almost 23 million sheets, or roughly 510 tons of wood.

Whether it is designing environmental solutions into products, reducing waste or helping lower the company's carbon footprint in one of a thousand ways, all Applied Materials employees contribute to making our part of the world a better place. Taiwan Earth Day, one way we're making a difference.
